Economy of Nevada

The modern economy of the state of Nevada is focused on tourists who are offered a rich choice of entertainment, first of all – gambling.

In Nevada, most of the hotel rooms are per capita in the United States (one hotel room for 14 state residents, with an average for the United States of America – one hotel room for 67 people). More than two hundred and fifty casinos with an annual income of over a million dollars (and hundreds of smaller establishments) offer their services to tourists.

Along with gambling itself, all major hotels and casinos also attract visitors with various shows, celebrity concerts, sports matches and other equally interesting events.

The largest, most luxurious, most famous hotels and casinos of Nevada are located, of course, in the “world capital of entertainment,” in the famous “city of sins” – Las Vegas .

More than two-thirds of the population of Nevada lives in the metropolis of Greater Las Vegas . Here, on Fremont Street in the city center and on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip in its suburb Paradise, the largest casinos attract millions of tourists. The Las Vegas Strip is the second (after Times Square in New York ) popular attraction of the United States .

After Las Vegas, the second most popular gambling and entertainment center in Nevada is Reno’s “largest small city in the world”, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the west of the state. It was Reno that was the gambling capital of the United States until the end of the 1950s, when the rapid growth of Las Vegas began. Today, Reno casinos are very popular with tourists from the north of California , in particular from San Francisco .

Several very popular casinos are also located in the city of Laughlin, which is one hundred and fifty kilometers south of Las Vegas, on the Colorado River. It is believed that Laughlin’s entertainment and activities are more suitable for families than those offered in Las Vegas or Reno. In addition, the largest annual biker event in the West United States – Laughlin River Run – is held in Laughlin.

Nevada is the only state in the United States, in some counties of which prostitution has been legalized.

Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States.

Outside of the largest tourist-oriented gambling centers like Las Vegas and Reno, the main sectors of the Nevada economy are agriculture and mining.

Nevada’s agriculture is mainly focused on raising cattle, milk production and growing vegetables. The state contains more than 500,000 heads of cattle and 70,000 heads of sheep. More than 90% of the arable land of Nevada is used to grow fodder crops.

The state produces a lot of minerals, primarily gold (about 9% of world production) and silver. Nevada’s deposits are very rich, but mining is expensive.

In addition, a number of engineering enterprises operate in Nevada, and food and electrical equipment are produced.

One of the largest employers in the state of Nevada is the US federal government . There are several military installations in Nevada, the largest and most famous of which is Nellis Air Base.

Located in North Las Vegas, just thirteen kilometers north of Las Vegas, the base is being trained by American military pilots. There are often exercises, including international ones.

The aerobatic team of the US Air Force Thunderbirds is based and trains at Nellis airbase .

It is believed that in the territory of the Nellis airbase there is an extremely classified “zone 51”.

Several other military facilities are located in Nevada, including the test site where nuclear weapons tests have been conducted since 1951.
Fifty-seven hectares of land at Nellis Air Base is occupied by a solar power station with a capacity of 14 megawatts. 70,000 solar panels can produce over 25 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, and the airbase itself consumes only a quarter of the energy produced. At the time of completion of construction, in 2007, it was the most powerful power plant in the world.

In general, Nevada, due to its sunny climate with low rainfall, is very well suited to create a solar power station. The largest of them – “Solar One” ( Nevada Solar One ) with a rated capacity of 64 megawatts and “Cooper-Monteyn Solar Installation” with a capacity of 48 megawatts. Both of these stations are located in southern Nevada, in the Mojave Desert near Boulder City.

The development of clean solar energy in Nevada, as well as in neighboring California, receives a lot of attention. In the coming years, the state plans to build new, even more powerful solar power plants.
